3 Smart City Technology examples

A smart city collects information from people and devices that are connected to certain assets. It then uses that information to monitor the city’s infrastructure, such as transport networks, schools and hospitals. By collecting data using smart city technology, city officials can implement changes to improve the efficiency of the city and the way it runs. This might include adjusting train timetables, employing more staff or relocating assets. Let’s take a look at three cities that are leading the way in smart city technology.

London, UK

In 2017, Transport for London collected data from passengers’ mobile phones to test how the data could be used to improve the tube service, help TFL prioritise investment and provide better travel information.

  • Routes - TFL could track customer’s route from start to finish point and where they chose to change stations, which informed it's in planning for future extensions to the service.
  • Stations -  TFL could track where customers would go in a station, which allowed it to analyse crowding and assess whether there are enough staff at each station.
  • Marketing - TFL collected data on the footfall through stations and the time passengers spent in certain locations, which allowed it to analyse the potential for advertising.

Yinchuan, China

Yinchuan city is China’s template for an effective smart city. Yinchuan has seen a number of smart city technology innovations that it hopes will attract new residents and improve the quality of life for its existing population.

  • Smart bins - Yinchuan city bins are solar-powered trash compactors. They also send a signal when they are full to allow bin collectors to plan an effective route.
  • Facial recognition payment - Passengers faces are linked to their bank account details, which improves the efficiency of boarding a bus or train.
  • Online GP - Haodaifu Online is an internet portal that links doctors with patients, providing remote therapy and prescriptions. The service reduces overcrowding in hospitals and doctors' surgeries.

Barcelona, Spain

Barcelona is using Cisco smart city technology to track the transport network of their city and use this information to improve services for their citizens.

  • Traffic Management - sensors placed in the city’s pavements and roads capture information about traffic flow and vehicle speed, which allows it to plan for traffic management solutions.
  • Smart lighting - Barcelona have placed strategic Cisco cabinets around the city that report back to a single operating system, allowing it to manage traffic lights and public lights from a single source.
  • Smart Parking - Barcelona uses Cisco Kinetic to provide parking services through public Wi-Fi, video cameras, video analytics, and sensor-enabled parking management, which reduces traffic congestion.

Commuting and travel time data is incredibly important when creating a smart city. You can use the TravelTime platform to:

  • See how far you can reach within a travel time limit using different modes of transport - try this free here
  • Create A to B routing in a city using multiple transport modes
  • Create a travel time matrix of journey times from many origins to many destinations
